sitemaps.org is a website sponsored by search engine to standardize an XML format for sitemaps.

The result of this was the Sitemap XML Format, which is a single XML file containing information about all the links on your website, which can be submitted to search engines.

Site Map Pro can generate this XML file by using the Google Sitemap Protocol menu option. This menu option generates version 0.90 standards compliant XML which can be submitted to any compatible search engine.

Compatible Search Engines

Google were the first to allow webmasters to submit XML sitemaps.
Yahoo have added support, as well as supporting their own text format.
MSN Live Search have stated that they will adopt the XML format in the future.
